The Cat’s Table harks back to a structure used by Ondaatje in one of my favourite novels, In the Skin of a Lion. Ondaatje is a master of creating beautiful set pieces & images that link together obliquely. His books are often like visiting an art exhibition, as you walk out, the images begin settling down into a narrative the resonates more & more as you reflect on it. So it is with The Cat’s Table. The story focuses on three boys (unchaperoned) who are travelling by ocean liner from Sri Lanka to England. This time period, marked by the wrenching away and the anticipation and anxiety of arrival, provides the novel with a tension, as the boys explore characters and situations on board the voyage.
